8/29 Classic August Sulphur planers - 7.5 JP MR 119

Classic August Sulphur Creek - upper air planers! Remember the good ole' days of August with no fronts needed, just jet stream sailing? Sunday moderate westerlies were in the forecast, with good upper air support from AM soundings, so off we went. Wind at the airport began when we got to Sulphur at 1:45. Some of the steadiest Sulphur winds I've seen in years, right from the get-go. By 2:30, good 7.5 sessions were to be had. Filled in more and more as the afternoon went on. Shore to shore planers - almost, not quite on the North side, but great on the South, planing through turns into the next reach. Hot damn, finally. By 4:00, 6.5 would have been fine, but so was wound 7.5. One other sailer - Spencer, with his cute family. He was learning the wing ding foil thing on a nice gear set up he'd just gotten on line. (A kiter also came out about 3:30 and headed out, not to been seen back at shore even by 6:00 - was waaay down wind. Underpowered?)

We sailed till 5:00 and the wind was still planeable at 6:00 when we pulled out for a liquor store run (gin and Belgian chick beer!.

Lake is lowest I've ever seen it. Island sticking up 6', just like John F. said. Boat ramp is sketchy but still works. Only one boat went out. Floating dock is high and dry. You can rig in the usual places but then it's a walk down the ramp and launch off the beach to the right or left - pretty easy, actually. Lot shorter than the DC walk that develops this time of year. Light wetsuits were fine in the 80 degree air, but will need 3/2 or more next time.

Sulfur still has those great relaxing ripper days, yahoo!

Lots of cormorants, gulls. Were hoping for sandhills in the fields but didn't see any. Next trip...
