8/13 & 14 San Diego 21m

First day at Fiesta Island at Mission Bay. I saw the flat water and riders out on 14m kites and thought it would be fun. Then I noticed that the boards they were using were enormous! One guy was even riding a huge Starboard windsurfing board with a Slingshot B-5 foil kite. :|| Anyway, rigged the 21 and rode for 90 minutes in puffy winds until the wind shutdown. The "sand" is part dirt/part sand and left my kite really dirty. The reach is less than Rush in July. To top it off, some Mexican dude was driving a pickup truck in the sand down the beach blasting Mariachi music. I had to rush to get my lines out of his path of travel. I thought no wonder Andy moved back to SLC.

The next day I went to Silver Strand. The wind was light, but I had the 21, so no worries. Rode well powered in small waves. The water was clean, beaches uncrowded, and very few kiters. Made me wonder why Andy would leave such a great place.

Kenny,

You were at Stinkys. That place is pretty lame since the reach is so short. The beach is mostly dirt and like you siad gets kites messy. And guys drive on the beach there and Stinkys is designated as a beginner area too. Next time you're there set up on the grass at the east end of mission bay (just look to the east when you're at Stinkys). The grass is right next to (north of) the Hilton hotel. The grass is clean, the guys that rig there are pretty good kiters and from there, if there is wind, you can go all over mission bay and wind in and out of the islands and inlets. It can be pretty fun.
There is also another area of mission bay called sail bay. Let me know when you go so I can tell you where the launch is. Much better set up and decent kiters.

Silver Strand is great...if there is wind. And without a 21 there is rarely enough.

Hit me up and I'll tell you about the J-street launch at the south end of San Diego Bay where I had some really great days. And I'll tell you about the imperial beach spot too. Good wave kiting there....If there is wind.. But don't go too south in the water or the coast guard will get mad that you crossed the international border....

again if there is wind.......

Billy,

Sorry, I missed you. I saw a guy on a Dyno 16. He was riding in the shore break and hitting the break like one would do on a skim board and throwing down powerful, clean double rotations. It made me think of you.

Andy,

Stinky's is an appropriate name. I went there because my kids were going to take a lesson, but the wind was too fickle. I think the 21m and a big board (my split board for travel is 138 x 42) is the key for San Diego riding. Hey, let me take you to lunch one day and we will talk SD kiting.
