6/13/06 Grantsville 5.7/5.3 Sonic85/HiTech8'2" Wind 12/
I decided to make it 2 days in a row since I had to cancel my June Gorge trip. I got to lake at 8:00 again. Had a wild 5.7 speed session on the Sonic then an even wilder session on the 5.3 and tiny Hi Tech. It was as good as any session I had at the Gorge last year (noting that I am one of those that thinks waves are a nuisance as they slow you down). The noon lull hit a little early. I was trying to catch the few leftover 5.7 windlines when Carl came flying by on his 7.2. I decided that was a great time to lie in the sun and warm some worn out muscles. John showed and had a 6.7 session. I finally rigged to join him and got to the water as nuclear hit again. I tried 5.7 and Sonic again. I was eating John’s dust on one rip across. I got in his tail wash trying to catch up to the speedster and had the highest speed crash I have ever had. I now have a 5.7 with a 6â€ÂÂX12†hole and a huge bruise on the shoulder. It just got wilder then as between 3:00 and 4:30 we got four 15 minute averages over 30 mph. We could feel the +45mph gusts in the SE corner as we faced some wild jibes. I have never sailed a 5.3 in winds that strong and I think only the old, heavier (17lb) HiTech saved me. It went west and we should have quit as it was getting more gusty-holey. Then it nuked from the NW. John went ripping of in a cloud of dust towards the Flying J while I decided to crash and sail back SW. I ended up sailing into the river on the SW end, brrrrr. It took me 10 minutes to finally see John pushing himself along the rocks on the north dam. Craig warns us to get off the lake before these things happen. It finally calmed down enough John sailed back. We packed up in a rainstorm. As we left, the sun came out and Kevin was ripping across the lake in some nice NW winds. This wasn’t just sailing, it was an adventure.
