3 Good Days of Utah Sailing
Sat. Get to Grantville early, take a number, find a slot to sail in, and deffinately, look over your shoulder before jibing. It was a fun morning on a small 75ltr board and 5.4 sail. It was pretty darn smooth, and great practice for jibing. I don't think we stopped planning for a couple of hours. Then we just had to grab bigger boards. Fun to see so many out.
Sun at Sulpher, pretty windy....5.4 and a bigger board for the lulls. Very powered up on the gusts. Lot's of WS'rs on the water. Water was cold, and I was glad that I had my drysuit on. Linda too, she hurt her knee on one of her turns, and was helped back to shore by a fisherman. just something to consider if you ever get helped in. See if they have a line and tie it to your complete rig, tie it to the base, and tow in that way. Fishermen don't know how to handle nice light WS boards. Linda's needs some minor repair work now. Linda is doing ok, but won't be WS'ing in the next few days.
Mon. UL PP 5.4 and small board. I did my own little tour downwind...not by choice, but toured the shore line to the far south end of the new south development. I made a bad choice of boards and opted for a small one, since Ken O was doing well on his 85ltr and 5.2 , I thought I could too....wrong. Unfortuneatly the wind lightened up, and I got further downwind. Since I was planning, I decided to make the best of it, keep sailing and hope for more wind. Had some good strong wind moments, that got me partially upwind, but not enough. Then the rain came, and the wind died, and i swam in a 100 yrds or so. Got to the reeds, where I could touch and started to walk back towards PP. the reeds got pretty thick, and I could barely touch as the waves came in, so I was not making much progress. Then the wind picked up a bit at that point, I decided it would be good to give it a try, get my sail in the air, and let others know I was ok. Still not enough wind to get upwind, but I was back to where I started in the reeds. I did notice a small boat ramp and thought maybe I could get to shore there, leave my gear, and go get my van and come back to get the gear. Unfortunately it was on the wrong side of the fence, and it would have been a long way from where I could get the van too. So I decided I would lsee how far I could carry my gear. Thank heavens it is pretty light. The weeds were so big that I couldn't get my gear past in normal carrying fashion, so I heaved it over my head, (like I had seen in the videos) and got past the weeds and around the corner of the fence line. And then I was very happy to see a paved path that went along the shoreline. I had walked on the path before, but I didn't know how far south it went. And just in case you are wondering..... It starts at the north side of the chain link fence, that goes around the back of the most south house in the development. The bushes were still a problem, and very tight to get the rig through in several places, but I managed to get through, with the rig over my head. Then I spotted smiling faces....Rick and John, THANKS GUYS, who grabbed my gear and helped me the rest of the way back. It was quite an adventure, not quite the downwinder that I was hoping for.
