Mem. Day Weekend, Grants/Sulf., 85L, 6.0/5.7
What a great Memorial Day weekend for sailing. John Freed already logged our sweet session on Friday at Grantsville. May 27 I arrived at Grantsville at sunup (6:20) to a line of RV’s all the way down the road. But there were few fishermen and no boats so I hit the water fast. The wind was even higher than Friday so it was a hard choice between 5.0 and 6.0 but I was fresh and figured I could handle the bigger sail. John rigged his 5.7 and it was all we could handle until 10:00. Several more windsurfers joined us later. Although the session was a little short it was great to be totally powered on the small gear in Utah.
We were planning a repeat May 28 but the front had made it past Grantsville. We switched to Sulfur arriving there at noon when, according to a sailor already on the water, the 1st big blast hit. With winds over 20 it was hard to choose the 5.0 over the 6.0 but with Sulfurs’ famous lulls I figured the bigger sail was the best choice. We sailed until 5:30 in mostly great winds. We were absolutely ripping for a 45 minutes when we got caught up in the downdraft of a nearby cloud. I wish I had the GPS but the batteries were dead. It matched the best days I have had at Sulfur. We came off the water with big smiles on our faces and totally beat. We agreed on the spot we weren’t sailing Monday so the bodies could heal.
I guess we missed nice Sulfur sessions on Fri. and Sat. afternoons but you have to do chores sometime. It was great to be on the small gear all weekend.
