Labor Day Pineview

I could not believe the number of boats on the water when I crested the dam. Went to Stringtown Road and found an empty beach and 10-15 mph wind. Launched the SA and took the Mdoor. I rode for awhile to make sure the wind would hold and then cruised up to windsurfer beach. Lots of cheers and hoots for my marginal airs. Best jump was probably only 10 feet high. Funny how there is never anyone around when you are boosting like a rocket. The wind held the 3 hours I was there. Definitely a light wind keeper.

Was it a guess or were there promising indicators? How was the chop?

Carl,

I called to see if there was any cloud cover because that can kill it. I didn't check any other indicators. Les has been getting rides on high pressure days, so I figured I would give it a try.

The chop wasn't too bad considering there were so many boats on the water. Now that we are past Labor day, it should be really good.

Calling to see if there is cloud cover sounds like a good idea but it's kind of a throw back to the 80's. How does Les do it? Marty used to have some kind of vague predictors but I can't remember what they were. He's not posting from there much anymore so maybe he's going elsewhere.

Pineview is the hardest to predict of any Utah spot. IMHO
been going there for 20+ years.
I only go there cause of the proximity to home.

Best spring and fall.
Best chance I feel is, as Craig calls it "the low effect"

"First clear day (or two) after a storm/short wave has passed by,
and the High pressure is moving in"

South winds in the valley are not a good thing.
always check the wind meter at the power plant in Weber canyon before making final decision. no need to go if the wind is still east.

Be there when it starts, or you will probably miss it.

It very hard to take a day off work for PV. but I'll probably be there most weekends this month. (unless UL has good forcast)

The most/best days I get at Pineview, are in Sept.

If it's worth all the bullsniky, and you can live with getting skunked almost half the time. Then PV is the place for you.

Les lives there and should be able to add to this lame forcast as time passes.

We also have a kiter that vacations here. When he is here, he tries to get wind just about every day. He made a comment that when he was here last year, end of August, begining of September, he had kiteable wind just about every day. Of course it's still Pineview wind. Quality stuff is rarer. He had the luxury to sit around and wait. I'll pay attention to his reports. Good summary Marty, as far as I know.

PS, Hawaii Hank was so bummed watching Kenny take off up wind with his "$3000 para sail and door" that he is now looking for a light wind board. The para sail will have to wait.

Sorry to bum out Hawaii Hank. The good news is that the SA cost me $1800, not $3000.

Marty is still riding all the time, but he has his own blog for posting.

Marty hasnt ridden in awhile or gave up on the blog. Probably to much gorge time made him a wind snob or he's catching up on all the work he missed.

Based on Marty's write up, my limited experience, and my sometimes too optimistic gut feel, Pineview should get some good wind in the next 3 days. I bet tomorrow will be the best (I like the second day after a weather change and also warmest temp). Need some kiters to test the theorys.
