7/3 Bird Island Basin
I missed my flight out of San Antonio yesterday and had to wait an extra day in Texas. I drove down to Corpus Christi and got a good day in at the Bird Island Basin. There is one rental shop there right on the water and all the sails were rigged. It was a semi-light South East wind (12-18) but with a big sail (8.0) and a 136 liter rental board I was planeing most of the day. The water was 81 degrees! If you are ever looking for a great place to teach some the basics, this seems a great location. In the lagoon, its generally waist to chest deep with almost no waves. They had lots of beginner rental stuff and it seemed like the people in the beginner lesson were all tacking back and forth by mid afternoon. Its also a great place to work on jibes. With flat water and newer equipment, my jibes were never better! I'd still prefer to be sailing with friends in Utah, but what started as a really bad day (missing a flight is never fun), it really turned into a great way to start my sailing season this year.
