Silver Strand, San Diego

When I head to San Diego I only take my largest kite. It is kind of nice carrying one bag for my board and kite. Wind was light the first day, but I still had fun in the waves. The waves were small, but perfect for a landlubber like me (biggest ones were head high). The next day the wind was 15 - 20 which is a bit much for the SA, but I pulled the depower strap in and had a great time. Rode for several hours with 80 degree air temp and 65 degree water. Felt nice. Saw some dolphins while I was out. I am sure glad I brought my gear.

BTW, if you go to San Diego, you can actually demo a kite and board rather than hauling your gear. Calikites located on Coronado (right on the way to Silver Strand) rents kites and boards. A board is $40 bucks a day (not cheap), but you can't haul a board that is longer than 140 cm without paying a fee on the airlines and a big board is what you need in California. A 16M bow and a directional board is a popular combo for riding the waves.

Wow, small world. I was right by Hotel Del on Tuesday evening, but I didn't get there till 6pm. Too late to kite. I did have my gear though. I'm in class all week which is too bad for me. I did kite on Mission Bay Monday afternoon. My son tried it for the first time and did quite well. Thanks again for the big board Kenny. It is a great trainer/lite wind board.

Saturday I was up west of Malibu with great winds. Most folks had their 9m kites. I was on my 12 and a little over powered. I left my 9m home cause it never blows that hard in Southern Cal! ;-) At one point there were 17 kites out in a relatively small area. Lots of dodging going on but fun to watch them all.

How long are you down here for Kenny?

Ken,

I have not tried Mission Bay yet. It was my third trip to SD with my gear and the first time there was enough wind to ride.

I was in SD from Saturday - Tuesday. I head to the LA area today taking my SA and a 13M (just in case it really blows). 9M riding in Malibu is really good. I heard the NW winds were honkling late last week. I stay in LA until Sunday and then drive back on Monday. I will be going to Torrance Beach as I have the whole family a long and it is a great family beach.
