Gorge 5/8--------------------5/28
What a great trip. I know May is a little early for normal weather patterns up there, but I went anyway. The wind was at first in 2 or 3 day cycles, a mixed bag of everything from 3.5 to 5.9 (I rode my 6.6 at Stevenson one day for an hour and a half on easterlies all by myself). Mostly I was at The Hatch or Dougs, but did catch 3 mile on the way in. I love that place. Kind of leary being all alone. So I asked 2 fishermen from Arizona to call the sherriff if I didn,t get in. The first day at 3 mile was perfect 4.7 (for me)with real nice swell. Then it blew all night and the next morning I went out on my 4.2 with huge, long and far apart swells. But by noon it had gone ballistic. I took my meter to the point on the Indians land and it was reading a steady 45 with gusts to 60. Needless to say, by then it was beer time. I was in no shape to try anything like that with noone to rescue me. One day at the Hatch the tall ships were coming up river firing their fake canons at each other when we noticed a red and white Naish kite on top of the rear mast. At first we thought it was a promotional gimic (Naish kites, powerfull enough for a tall ship ) but then we saw the guy being towed behind. He was showing off to the passengers onboard and got a little too close. You can find it on You Tube under kitesurfing, tall ships if you want to check it out. It was nice to sail with the surfrats a little and Jamie showed up on the last day at the hatch. They caught the first strech of wind to last more than 3 days in a row. Craig is probably still out there. The fuel pump in my truck went out on the way home but it's fixed now so I'll be able to get back up there for the 4th of July weekend for a spell. Maybe I'll see you at the swap and whats happening at Utah lake that day? Oh ,by the way gas was 2.25---2.50 a gallon and Diesel was even cheeper. Much better than last year. Take care and see you out there. Tom W.
