4/24 Jalama 11m and 15m Cruiser Pro
Posted: Sun Apr 25, 2010 2:51 pmWhen the locals say it's gutsy here, it's not really as bad as Utah mountain gusty in terms of wind quality, HOWEVER, when a lull drops your kite and you are in an overhead break, it becomes more of an issue. Couple the breaks, whitewater that slows you down, currents and super up and down winds, and that was Jalama today. A few locals on 7 and 8 m kites got blown downwind and walked about a mile back to the launch.
I didn't really know what was down there, so no go for me. I launched 11m to start and had fun but wasn't fully powered. Came in when it faded. Rigged 15 after a while when the others left and did ok until I dropped the kite and was dragged through the surf to shore. Nothing too tragic. Re rigged, and broke down as there was no wind - and then at about 530 it turned on again. Since I was still AT the beach with a willing launcher...why not?
About 30 minutes later I came back just in time for the wind to get really bizarro and strong. Time for a cold one. Days like today make you appreciate Jalama's rep for being gnarly. I was never able to let my guard down and have a good jump without worry of being gusted onto shore, or losing my board and drifting into the break, or dropping the kite etc. Kept me on my toes though, and certainly not dull.
Solid wind coming weds. Might be an SUP day today and manana.
