Surprise (at least to me) appearance of a breeze from the SW a little after 1. By the time I got to the beach (Charleston) there were definite whitecaps in evidence, so my plan to rig a 9.5 went out the window. 7.5 or 8.5? Looked as though the wind was building, so I went with the 7.5. Wrong choice. Actually, the 7.5 worked pretty well from Charleston, past Barbed Wire, and almost to Island Beach, where Carl was tearing it up on his Formula board (or was it his iSonic?) and a huge WindWing sail. Chatted briefly, then turned tail and headed back, concerned that if the wind faded much more, I might not make it, not at least without lots of tedious slogging. Fortunately for me, the wind filled back in a little, and I got back reasonably quickly. All in all, not a bad day. :))

no, not bad at all. 3 hrs of nonstop rallying on the formula gear, 1-4pm. think that's the first formula sesh i've had this year and it was a hand full gradually tapering as the day went on. at the end i had a spectator on the beach ask me how it's possible to go straight upwind. i told him it's just an illusion but admitted sometimes it really does seem real.
