Fish Lake Complex, 2-5-11 9m lit
There are many amazing spots to Snowkite south of I-70, but most have a limited season and difficult access. Saturday Marty, Matt D and myself made the pilgrimage into the Fish Lake complex, using sleds to travel 15 miles into the backcountry.
The area we had scoped on maps and in previous mid-summer trips offered up better rides than expected. HUGE area to ride, terrain and slopes that offer intermediate to advanced runs. All sitting between 9800 and 10,500 feet.
With the strong north forecast we found ourselves totally lit on 9 meter foils, and eating up the occasional gust with a high speed run. Looks like the wind is good from the south to a NW direction at the spot.
There are a few roadside spots to hit also, near the mouth of Fish Lake, as well as on the lake itself. Although the lake is mostly bare ice this trip. The sage down low at the roadside spots is mostly covered, there is enough snow to ride there, but watch for exposed obstacles.
I'm putting together a write up with photos that I'll post later. The short and warm season that far south make Fish Lake best between Jan and Feb.
