Grantsville Res Wind Meter Replacement

Postby Josh Shirley » Fri May 30, 2025 9:18 am

We are working on replacing the Grantsville Reservoir weather station.
Duane Bush has been leading the charge on this project.

Proposal
The current station, next to the reservoir, has been out of operation for the last few years.
Many unsuccessful attempts to fix the existing wind meter have been made.
The current station utilizes a radio tower to transmit all data to a computer located within the Tooele County office.
At this time, there isn't an internet data connection in the area.

We have sourced a cellular data weather station that will be installed and provide current weather readings.
The system connects to the Ambient Weather Network https://ambientweather.net.
AWN allows data to be shared with Weather Underground, which in turn shares data with MesoWest and Weather Flow (IWindsurf, IKitesurf).

The faulty part was replaced on June 15th.
The reporting data should be correct now.

Look to the next project - Ross Creek and/or Sulphur Creek meter.

Great idea and super fast implementation! Kudos to John, Duane B., Josh, and the other winger movers and shakers!

Thanks, everyone. (How many years has it been we've been guestimating G'ville winds??)

Chipped in my $100, now ready for the Ross Creek meter.

Gotta ask again, do we not have some funds in the UWA account? Those should certainly be available for part of these investments, particularly the State Park fees for Ross Creek. ??

You guys rock.

Dimitri

Dimitri,

Good questions.
As far as the UWA funds currently have about $1500.
Our expenses run about $800 per year.
Annual income doesn't quite cover expenses.
The past years' savings are covering current expenses.

The website is our main expense.
It needs to be updated to the newest version, and then it can be moved to a cheaper host.

Thanks for taking the reins on all of this.
Maybe we should organize a regatta or 2 to drum up interest in wind sports. As recently relocating from New Jersey, the local club would sponsor events 3 times a year. Spring, Summer and Fall. Introducing new folks to all the fun you can have on the water. The last event I attended had 200 plus participants. Fun races and sponsors giving away prizes. I think that something like that could increase the bottom line... Just throwing that out there.
