8/18 Sun Pineview 13M

Postby Marty Lowe » Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:37 am

Classic setup for PV
First clear day after a disturbance, when High pressure starts to build.

Windsurf point was looking gusty, up and down stuff.
Bob, Darrin and Roy rigged
(how was it up there?)

Doug and I went to Middle inlet.
$10 is a rip off, but we got our moneys worth.
First session was basic good Pineview,
then the wind picked up nicely for a seccond session.
One of those days at PV that only happens a few times a year.
even started riggin smaller kite, but stayed with 13M
Great day,,,
Unusual for us to leave while the wind was still blowing at 6

No jumping on my bad knee yet,
but setting my stance a little closer,
may open the door for quicker progress.
Just mowing the lawn for now
(rick, that means just BnFn, Oh, that means going back and forth, no tricks)

Billy,
DC is not exactly free, we may be technically trespassing on State Park property by avoiding the Island Beach entrance. With so many kiters using the pull out to park, this could become an issue. DC Jim may know more specifics.

As to the free use of DC Darkside Beach, no, it's not OK with State Park people; all park users are supposed to pay. Is enforcement likely? Probably not since it would be be very difficult and time consuming for the rangers.

I don't like this mentality. The people of Utah are the State. The State wouldn't exist if it wasn't for taxpayer money. It was taxpayer money that built and maintains the Deer Creek Dam. The way I see it, we are paying for the right to access the water. If people want to pay extra for picnic tables and restrooms that's fine. But like Jordanelle, the only access to the water is through their developed area. IMO, That's wrong!

I agree. It's always annoyed me that they blocked off the old highway leading down to Jordanelle at the NE end; it would have been such a great way to access the lake on North wind days.

I am wondering if anyone has spoken to the Ranger at Deer Creek regarding kite access at the east end. I would personally be glad to pay for a State Park pass to continue to have a safe launch at one of the most reliable wind locations in Utah. It's probably time to have some dialogue with the Ranger. The State Parks are in business to fill their parks and collect fees weather we agree or not. I am the one driving the Deer Valley resort vehicle and I have been approached by the Ranger at Jordanelle about sending our customers their way. Maybe Deer Creek could benefit from the kite community. Any ideas?

I agree with john and also think that kiting should not be allowed at IB. With all the kids and families on the beach it's a matter of time until some guy buys a waroo off ebay and goes kiting. However that would limit access when the water is high. With Billy increasing our kiting community exponentially and the growing popualarity with the sport, we should address these issues before they become a problem and well before we lose access to DC. We should be the ranger's best friends!

I was able to contact Rick Redmon who is the Park Manager at Deer Creek State Park. Rick was not overly concerned about current usage by kiters. When the dam repairs are complete and the water level goes back up the beach goes away. It sounds like water level is controlled by users downstream. The only property the Park owns which could be used as a kite beach at the east end would be at the Charleston entrance. Rick said there is some land south of the restrooms which is fairly clear and open. I don't know if the wind is strong enough or consistent enough but it's probably worth investigating.
