Yuba weekend 6.2/92ltr 7.2/136ltr

Postby Sarah Ranes » Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:21 pm

3 days of sailing....wahooooo..... 2 days on the 6.2, one on the 7.2. Practically had the lake to ourselves for camping and windsurfing. One other windsurfer, Monica, joined us on Sat and a couple of boats went by. Plenty of sunshine, and wind, enough to wear us both out. The one day of north wind, was the steadiest, and we hardly ever came off a plane. It was a GOOD Weekend!

Wish I could've made it. Way to go! I'll relinquish one of my Yuba stripes... I underestimated the forecast. :?? Happy birthday Linda...

However, Lone Peak is the most amazing hike I've ever done. But the weather was wild!!!

Got some static on top... One of the scarier moments of my life... Especially considering that we had some kids with us... By static I mean, right after summiting and sitting on the peak, which is an area about as big as a large family dinner table with 800 foot drops on three sides and not much less on the fourth, a cloud was fast approaching from over Utah lake. The sun was out and the sky was pretty clear above us, but we decided to make it a quick visit. About 100 feet from the summit later, my buddy's hair started standing up as the cloud started over us and he began scrambling to get into a hole in the boulders at the top. My backpack started humming like a powerline... My brother and I threw the kids in the safest place possible then we crouched on our toes in the best hole we could find... It passed quickly... But it was pretty scary. My brother was the one who insisted on going despite the questionable forecast. And he's the conservative one! Temperatures ranged from 35 to 70 up there during the day. Huge hail to clear skies. 0 to 60 MPH wind gusts. Although lightning never struck the mountain luckily.

But it is a brutal hike... We were glad to break it up into two days.

I tried looking for sailors on Utah lake through the binocs.

PS... How low is the water at Yuba? Which beach did you stay on? West or North?

We parked our trailer on the west beach, pretty close to the water. I was surprised to see pretty solid ground, on much of the beach, which we need for our big ass trailer, to get it in and back out. We were just north of the only group of trees, which had cars there when we arrived. I like that beach because you can sail from the beach easily, on a south or north wind. It worked out well and we had a blast. We came home tired from sailing, so that is good.

Water temp was good, water level seemed ok for this time of year. I actually took some pics, that I will post, as soon as I can, that shows the water level and beach.

Rick, I'm glad that you had fun on your hike. Sounds a bit scarry, and makes me think that my knees would be unhappy, but you are wayyyyyyyyy tougher, and younger than me.

Totally Sarah, I like that beach to launch from too because of the dual direction benefit and not a ton of sand blow. It's just that usually the trees are inhabited by creatures, so, I think you were better off... Yeah, for sure I lose a Yuba stripe on this one!

I gotta tell ya, my knees and feet coming down through the burned area on the Bear Canyon Trail or Mordor as we were calling it, were yelling at me... But I felt great the next day. I thought I was going to be so sore. Conditioned from the other hikes. Timp is next in a couple weeks.
