5/6 Willard Skunked, but great potential

Postby kenclewis » Wed May 06, 2009 10:29 pm

The wind was blowing great starting about noon so I thought I would give it a try. Willard Bay State park is full now which means almost no beach to launch from so I decided to try the bay on the west side of Willard bay. To get there, take the VERY BUMPY dirt road on the south side of Willard Bay and then go up the west side about half way. (Refer to our Google map of kiting locations) It took about 20 minutes just on the dirt road. It is about 3-4 miles.

The wind died about the time I got setup (then came back about an hour after I left.) In the mean time, I paddled around in a raft to get some water depth readings. Every reading I got was within a few inches and about 25-26". The bottom doesn't feel too bad as far as sinking in. It is fresh water although it looks like it is part of the Great Salt Lake from satellite images. The launch isn't the greatest but the fact that it is a consistent 2 feet deep sure makes it nice. I look forward to trying it again with hopefully a more consistent wind.

Thanks for the recon and report Ken. Nice write up on the locations page too. How far did you paddle from shore when doing depth measurements? From the picture and your depth measurements, it looks like it could be a decent spot (by Utah standards) to teach someone body dragging. Any feeling on that?
thanks

I probably paddled out about 100 yards in a big circle. It appears to be very flat there. I headed back down the road (south) about a quarter mile, stopped and went in there (walking) and it was about a foot or so deep. Another quarter mile south and it was land. And the land looks very flat. The bottom felt very smooth when I was walking around but I can't guarantee anything. It appears to very slowly get deeper the further west and/or north you go but I have no idea how much. I was told by an "air boater" that it is three feet deep. I'm guessing that would be max depth.

Hope that helps.
