Powder Mountian 12m Waroo

Postby lesvierra » Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:42 pm

Powder mountain is ready. In fact, fun riding conditions. A good foot of coverage with some rocks but I didnt hit anything in an hour of riding. There are lots of barely covered bushes that make for some fun little kickers. You experienced guys should get up there before they are covered up. Winds 10-15mph out of the west. Met Auggie and rode for awhile with him.

Lots of snow up there where the wind doesnt blow. Lots of new tracks including a set down james peak.

Fantastic! I'm stoked that the snow season is opening up.

For those of us not in the know, what's the deal with PowMow? And I mean, all the way down to the basics.

-> How do I get there?
-> What's the approach to the kiting spot like? Will I need snowshoes?
-> What's the current news on access given that the mountain isn't quite open fo' bid-ness?
-> Am I likely to see anyone else there over the weekend?

Thanks for any answers!

Les,

I saw your post and decided to check it out for myself - thanks for posting. The wind was 10-15 out of the west. I flew a 12M Frenzy and used a pair of twin-tip skis. The coverage is pretty good, there are rocks and the tops of bushes that are exposed, so be ware if you are a foil kiter because the exposed bushes are bridle catchers. I set up near the parking lot and cruised over to the riding area. I noticed the stumps where the trees that made access difficult used to be - A big thank you to all who cut down those pesky trees!!! It was good to be on the snow again, the conditions certainly were not epic, but not bad for preseason - guess I was spoiled the last couple years with powder openers at Skyline.

J,

There is a lot of information on Powder Mountain in the archives. Just do a search and you will find all of the info you are looking for regarding how to get there and where to ride. One piece of advice, if you are new to snowkiting, I recommend walking on the cat track that is located north of the parking lot. You will want to walk east towards the radar towers along the cat track. Set up on the other side of the trees. This will save you the hassle of trying to negotiate your way from the parking lot over to the main riding area. It can be dicey depending on the wind direction and the strength of the wind.

No, I don't think you will need snowshoes.

There is a big no trespassing sign. I think it is because they are doing some construction on the lodge. I talked to one of the workmen and he was very friendly. However, if someone asks you to leave, they have every right to do so since Powder Mountain owns the property. Have fun and be careful.

In regards to needing a pass-I stopped in the lodge after kiting yesterday and saw a sign in the lobby that said if you plan on hiking around have a beacon, probe, shovel and partner. The parallel that I take from that is that we don't need a pass as long as the resort isn't really open. The management that I spoke with were still uncertain as to whether they would even open for night skiing this weekend. Even if they do it will be at least another week and probably more like 2 weeks before the place opens for day skiing. No word yet on the kiter season pass but I am working on it.
You can park in the Hidden Lake parking lot-the no tresspassing signs are for the construction. Park on the side of the lot away from the construction.
I did talk to the new owners representative yesterday for a while also. He was going out with the mountain manager to ski the night skiing runs to assess them for opening. It really helps that this person is out on the snow and not some suit who doesn't even ski. Even better than that is the fact that he seemed interested in kiteskiing. I offered to show him how to kiteski and he said he would like to give it a try. The mountain manager also wants to give it a try. They said to get hold of them the next time that I go out. If we can just get these guys to fly a kite I think they will be hooked and I can't think of any better allies to have for our access issues.

I'll donate a trainer and kite if they are envolved.

There are survey stakes for a road going out to the towers and beyond. May be drive up snowkiting one day in between condos...
