2/10 Pow Mow/Pineview Conditions

Postby Augie » Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:29 am

Went to Pow Mow on Saturday. Winds were 18mph west. Arrived @12:00 and left @2:00. I rode the 10m Frenzy and was able to shoot the gap back to the lot. It is really amazing how much the wind dies while crossing the gully even with a fairly steady wind. I ran into a couple of out of state kiters while I was derigging. They were up skiing but didn't know where the riding area was and had never done the snow (just water). When I left they were rigging up to ride till sunset. I spoke with management about staying past the resort closing and they "don't care but you are on your own out there", if you kite after the area is closed. The snow is better and after yesterday's big dump it should be back to being great.

Pineview is now just a lake on top of the ice. It rained on it pretty good and with last weeks warm temps, I think it is done for the year, at least for me. Too many soft spots and cracks.

18" of new snow at Powder Mountain. The optimist in me says freezing temps at night will hopefully get Pineview in good order but will need some new snow on top for riding. Kens question, "Wake board of skis today??"

I like to think that I am an optimist also, but the point forecast calls for a high of 49 on Friday in the day and a low of 33 at night with a high of 52 on Saturday. Right now the overnight temps just don't get low enough (20f-25f) to freeze what melts in the day-at least not very solid. Would you like to meet at Pineview to kite on Saturday? Falling through the ice with ski's on is not something I would like to experience. Let the ice fisherman fall through-we can still kite Monte and Pow Mow.

Hey Auggie, I'm all for ice fisherman falling in first. That's my indicator that things are good, when they settle down with their backs against the wind. There were some folks out on the res today. I always think about how to get out after falling in to through the ice. I think I can kick my skis off, but I dont know how the hell you climb out with out ice picks. I heard you can levitate with fear but I'm not sure about that. I was evaluating some sewer pump stations once. My boss fell through a grate into a 10' deep sewer vault. This was the kind of guy who wouldnt use your writing utensil because of his fear of germs. After looking at the vault, I couldnt figure out how he got out, either could he, he just levitated... lets let the ice fisherman go first... see you at Powder.

btw, check out the huntsville weather station, it gives actual temps, low last night 24f. Temps the next few days down to 16f. Then warming up. Maybe will get that layer of snow.
