SKM Weekend

Postby Marty Lowe » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:16 am

There was wind for the weekend of the Skyline Kite Masters..

Friday was sunny and windy for 13M kites, with lots of kiter's on the hill.
Snow conditions were like soft groomers at the resort.
The sunset session was fantastic, you'll see photos of that for years to come.

Saturday started with 11M gusty wind, and the snow had hardened up overnight.
Free riding wasn't as fun as the day before,
but that made for a killer day for racing.
the course wasn't crowded with non racers, like last year.
Windy, yet challenging conditions made for great racing.
Many racers would watch the races between there heats instead of free riding.
Lots of spectators watching the head to head races.
Just as the last trophy was handed out, the storm moved in,
with the strong winds that were predicted, but everyone had there fill of kiting,
and headed off the mountain for dinner and partying.

Sunday, Strawberry was calling, I had to do it.
But as I was driving up there, I passed Doug, turned around,
he said it was such a blizzard that he couldn't even find the parking lot.
We headed back to Richardson and rode 11M on the hills there.
Noah from Montana really wanted to kite Strawbs.
After a full session at PC, we packed up with dreams of a great sunset session.
It happened.
We reached Daniels Summit to sunshine and nice wind.
Lots of kites at Strawberry River, but
the hard pack and snowmobile tracks looked unappealing,
so we went to Chicken Creek,
11M with powder stashes in the lee side of the terrain.
Second sunset session of the weekend, capped off a great SKM weekend.

Brian and Heather once again have raised the bar for kite events.
Everyone had smiles for miles as they left for home.

Thanks you to all who came out to support this local/national event. The weather had been amazing from Tuesday on with fresh powder and wind every day. By Saturday one had to search a bit more, but plenty of snow and terrain was waiting for any explorer.

Sunday brought another batch of fresh snow and cleared throughout the day.. leaving the weekend with one of the more epic sunset sessions I have ever seen. All in all, riders from Utah and out of state had great rides 8 out of the last 8 days including today (monday).

GPS results hit 50 plus during the gusts.

Some of the highest flights and longest hang times were witnessed this weekend, along with guest appearances from top riders like Jason Slezak, Tamatoa Gillot, Alex Peterson and Red Bull rider Adam Koch.

One of the better weekends at Skyline, with amazing riders, great people... no problems with snowmobiles or lines getting run over. Just wind and good times.

Free parties with several kegs of Ska brew were shared amongst the 100 snowkiters during the weekend, and plenty of goodies went home with everyone.

Windzup,
Brian Schenck
