Since there seemed to be little or no chance of wind, I went roller skiing about noon. As I headed North, there seemed to be a bit of a headwind, but it gradually died away as I neared the turnaround point of my route. Heading back South, there again appeared to be a headwind, only this time it was building. Anemometer was only reading in the single digits when I got home, but then suddenly at 1 it was reading in the teens. Initial wind readings at DCIB were in the single digits and low teens, suggesting the need for something big, but maybe not too big since there were some impressive whitecaps in the distance. By the time I had my 7.5 rigged, the meter was showing high teens and low twenties, suggesting that I might be in trouble. Went out anyway and discovered two things: (1.) the 7.5 was too big and (2.) I definitely need hand protection. Rigged a 6.0 and was mostly powered up to VERY powered up for the next hour and a half. Had to quit before the wind did. The wind readings on the beach, which included gusts of 39 and 40, were significantly higher than what was recorded by my home weather station; not sure why.
