3/17 - Lake Powell - 12m

Postby Mike Storer » Sun Mar 17, 2013 6:34 pm

There were some questions about the legality of kiting on Lake Powell but after talking to some rangers, I'm happy to report that it is now legal.

Brought my gear down not knowing the conditions but I'm glad i did, we got a perfect west wind in the high teens/low twenties this afternoon which brought on a few hours of perfect kiting in Bullfrog. I could see how the wind would be gusty coming any other direction. I was lucky and thankful.

Let me add however, that although legal, the Rangers prefer we do NOT leave the water. If we are using the kite simply as an engine it's entirely legal. If you're getting huge air and drawing attention to yourself you may be asked to stop. I'm not sure how strict they are on this but this is what a follow up call from the Ranger's office told me.

Mike,

I'm assuming a ranger pulled you aside and told you this? Just my opinion but kiting without jumping....? Sure thing.... haha

This is becuase the rangers at lake powell have been educated poorly, At one point they banned "kite tubes" at lake powell, and have since continued to connect kites to the kite tubes this, maybe a issue the UWA need to work on with lake powell. Not many people kite there but several have been spoken to by the rangers.

A couple years ago I was setting up at bullfrog and was conronted by three rangers. All were excited to see
what kind of air I could get. It was a rippin day with 20's gusting to 30. They loved it and wanted pictures.
