Pismo Beach 6/5 7m Bularoo

Postby lesvierra » Wed Jun 06, 2007 9:15 pm

Sounds like alot of excitement back in Utah. I got out yesterday at Pismo. First time kiting in the ocean. Winds kicked up from about 10-15 to 20-25 around noon. We drove out on the beach with two kites in the air. Buy the time I got out, the place near the beach on ramp was packed with kites and growing. On shore winds were cool because you could do huge reaches back and forth in the shallows. I never tried to go out where the bigger waves were. It was fun figuring stuff out like stepping up over white water. Smooth water between waves. Still dont have a mid size kite so I opted for a 7m bularoo and big board. Lots of fun cant wait to do it again. Met Kinsley from xtreme big air. Great fun to watch the local riders.

I went to sherman island a couple of days before. Hard core with the launch in the bushes and onshore winds. With winds 20+ and waves I opted to just watch. Heading back tomorrow, maybe I'll grow some balls. I figure the water laced with pesticides and fertilizer will help.

Todd,

Great place to camp on the beach if you dont mind hanging out with recreational vehicles. Bring a land board for when the wind is light. Similar to on the water, you can ride both directions up and down the beach for a long ways.

The wind is for sure consistent, but I dont know how much it blows. I grew up inland and know that when its hot inland the coast gets foggy and cool with little wind. This happens a lot in the summer. So it would take some doing to watch the weather, do some research on the local kite shops, and plan accordingly.

if your going to go. go sooner rather than later. I ride pismo a couple times a year. It is good wind 90% of the time during the spring and early summer. Calm in the morning then picks up around noon for good mid size kites and blows until early evening. Wind gets lighter the closer to the Pier you are, i usually like to kite about a half mile down the beach (Oceana entrance), that is where some of the best local riders hang out. Don't worry they are really nice. Tons of beach. Once it gets hot though mid summer it is less frequent (have to wait for the pre and post frontal winds). By early july it is usually a once or twice a week thing.
You can definitely camp on the beach. Cost you $10 a day to camp/ $5 to drive your car on for the day, but you only have cold showers outside. Have stayed at the Pismo Coast RV park which was awesome. you walk right from your campsite onto the beach and back complete with hot showers when your done. you can also stay right next door with a tent at the State park for about $20/ night i believe. Come check out the Xtreme Big Air kite demo next year in May. tons of fun, ride all the kites and boards in the industry. This year was sweet. Check out the photos
