5-20-09 Sulfur

It didn’t bode well when we turned south at Evanston to see a huge dark cloud. It had just rained at Sulfur and the wind was light. But within 15 minutes blue sky appeared, the wind came roaring in and we were off to the races. John F. was on his 5.7 and me on a very flat 6.0 in winds that were at times in the 25 to 30 range. The little 85L Sonic was screaming. On several reaches I was pulled so hard forward that I darn near crashed into shore trying to unwedge my front foot from the footstraps. But Sulfur being Sulfur, every time I considered a smaller sail I would have to schlog for a minute and scratched that idea. After 1½ hours, the black clouds to the south that were driving the winds dissipated and the wind was gone. We waited until 4:00 and were rewarded with some big gear winds for another 1½ hour session. From the forecast, we never expected a small gear session so we felt blessed. Even John was warm this time. Hot sailing and cold water, Utah sailors specialty. On the news side, the lake is full, they just put in the dock (darn), and they put the float back over the island (seems early for that). It looks like a sailor’s drought now so maybe I will get the 10 pounds of bugs off the front of the van.

Sailing both the Gorge and Utah on my 8'2" HiTech and my 3 Starboards; Sonic 85L, S-Type 115L, and Carve 135L. Small quiver is Northwave, larger sails are Ezzy and Sailworks. Often in my white Odyssey but also in my wife's motor home.
