Sept. 29, Sulfur, 6.0, 7.0

I was looking at Grants but, after sailing Sulfur and UL the last two times, I couldn’t bear the thought of the short reach (especially for the all day event I had planned). Sulfur was sweet. It was covered with whitecaps when I got there a little after 10:00; that seemed way earlier than normal. It was reading 18-22 at the water so I hit the water fast with a flattened 6.0 and had a blast. By 11:00 there were plenty of white knuckle windlines, probably 5.2 or 4.7, but there were still the famous Sulfur ups and downs so I stuck it out on the 6.0. The winds seemed identical to last weekend but with the wind south instead of west the chop was gone and replaced by some decent waves. And to go ripping through the flat area on the lee of the island is exhilarating. Strangely, it died back a little at 4:00 right when I expected it to go nuclear. I rigged the 7.0 and had a nice last hour and went home. Temperatures in the high 70’s seems bizarre for Sulfur Sept. 29. Only one other person showed up, a kiter. Sulfur is so brutal to kiters. The rangers showed up and they will start filling Sulfur Thursday.
