Save ULLB meeting bullet points

Postby bordy » Tue Sep 27, 2011 7:31 pm

It has been brought to my attention that many members of the community feel as thought there voices may not be heard during our meeting with the commissiner, I am going to list a few point that I beleave should be addressed, please add anything you feel is important.

- Maintain access to ULLB, mentioning how we have maintained the beach, functioned with crowds during busy days over the period of our usage(since 2004), provide a list of dates over the past three months we have kited at ULLB based on our forums wind log, to provide a detail account of our true usage.

-Provide assestance to the commission about kiting, including why ULLB is such a glorious spot to kite at including the process we go through to become kiters,(lessons, practice, right of way rules etc.) and our own communnitys ability to maintain its self with out issues at all of the other locations through out the state we enjoy kiting from, including ULLB. We plan on bringing a small kite, bar and lines, harness (with floatation device built in,North air styler} and board for demo purposes also.

- Provide proof of our communitys cander and character, as well as our williness to adapt and adjust our impact at ULLB including adjusting our current practices to maintain year round daily access if nesaccery. we hope to be able to maintain our ability to pump and rig in a pleasent area that doesn't damage our gear.

-be flexable to the Commissions ideas of how to manage our group so that we can devolop and maintain a great realationship with them to provide years of kiting enjoyment at ULLB

-Address many kiters negitive out look about visiting the park for fear of repercussion from the Parks department and its on and off site employees.

-Again apologize for the behavior and judgement used while playing bocce ball in the park, this is a item both Chris and I have apologized for to both Roger and Kelly and have been reasured it has nothing to do with the restriction of our park use.

PLEASE list any and all considerations you may have that you think have merit for our meeting, thanks again for everyones input.

On the flip side of the coin-- do we currently have a concise understanding of the counties concerns about our park usage?

If it is nothing more than Kelly has a personal vendetta against us then we may want to address it one way. If there are other real usage concerns it would be good for us to understand them so that we can effectively address them.

The only things I've gleaned from previous posts is that they may think we are ruffians who break sprinklers, trees, and picnic tables. Also we generally scare away other park goers. In this case maybe we should promise that all uwa kiters will attend finishing school :).

I also think this line of questioning should be one of the main talking points at the meeting. This reminds me of the adage "Seek first to understand, then to be understood.". Or something like that.

Brad, you make very good points which have been taken into consideration. The representation at the meeting is quite solid. Your quote from Stephen Covey? is spot-on.

My two cents:

I call on national accounts in my line of business. There are some rules that I try to always follow:
1. Ask how long the other party is available to meet and stick to the amount of time available.
2. Express gratitude for the opportunity to meet.
3. Give the other party a list of the names of the people who are with you in attendance. If you don't have business cards for everyone, a simple handout with each person's name and contact information will work.
4. Per Brad's recommendation - First ascertain the other parties concerns and address them.
5. Be prepared (Billy, that is a great list), however only cover the topics that interest the other party.
6. Look for a win - win solution that benefits both sides.
7. Take notes and make a list for follow-up.
8. Even if you don't like the final outcome, be gracious and thank them for their time. Don't burn bridges, you can always readdress the issue in the future if you are polite and courteous.

I wish all of you good luck and I thank you for working with the Commissioner to retain access for kiting at Lincoln Beach.
