Skyline Drive Snowpack

Postby MikE mAy » Fri Oct 27, 2006 3:26 pm

anyone been down there yet to check the goods? a co-worker just got back from hunting down in that area wednesday. he said he tried to get up to the ridge/plateau in his 4-wheeler, but was unable to. he said there was "three feet" of snow up there. he said something about mudslides closing down the road and they were working on fixing them as he was there. i've also heard of a snowpack developing at 9,500 feet up in the cottonwoods. what elevation is skyline? anyone think it's worth a check?

anyone interested in a sunday exploratory drive?

levi- how is pow mow looking?

Skyline is at 9600-9800 feet where the standard riding takes place. High enough for good snow, but exposed enough for the wind to blow it off.

The mudslides are on the Joes Valley side, and while there may be deeper snow in the steeps and trees on that side of the range, there is not much kiting on that end.

I drove over Skyline this weekend, and the strong winds have blown the snow clear, there is a 6 inch base with 12 inch high rocks all around. We'll need another big storm or maybe a couple more little ones before the place is open to ride.

So on Saturday I passed on the chance to ride and headed down to the Swell for some Mtn Bike action. On Sunday night coming back, there were obvious tracks that someone had snowkited at mm14. Congrats to some lucky rider who braved life and limb to have a shot at an October session. :D

More snow soon...pleaze
