Yuba Lake is worth to check out for kiting

Postby Jacob Buzianis » Wed May 30, 2007 5:14 pm

The morning Thermal blowing from the SE. Similar to Rush lake

The sandy beach and shallow area on the North side.

I would plan on camping there for at least two days to get those windy thermal morning.

I'm planning on camping there a few time this summer.

Yuba rocks, just ask Layne, Rick, Cindy, Brett, Lewis, Josh

Postby John Dubock » Wed May 30, 2007 10:02 pm

of course everyone else in the UWA has been majorly skunked there! Josh spent his Wonderbread years there, so desperate to sail early he arrived late, slept in the open field with the Rabbits pecking at his ear all night. Rick H. being brainy brought long plywood to run over the tire rippers after closing time. Brett will tell you stories of 55knot nights bending trees, and smooth mornings alone at Painted Rock. Layne/Cindy devoted 13 of 14 summer weekends and got neck high blowing sand wind, you guessed it, 13 of 14 weekends.

Rick has sailed it at midnight and one unforgettable nuclear afternoon when a boat sank as he rigged, might have been the same day that the 4 person tent flew across the sky.

Rossberg/Big Wave Dave/Kenji survived a very real tornado. The key is committing to being on the beach at dawn, The Fayette Wind if its going to drain happens at dawn till 930am, quits then the smooth offshore West wind goes off and on all afternoon. The carp are as thick as mattresses, but the water is clean and the swell although tiny is steady. 75 to 85 degrees seems to be the ticket, any hotter and it calms out. Riding from West Beach to Painted Rocks is a gamble, it can shut off instantly.

Glad to hear the report John!
Windzup has just moved operations to Mt. Pleasant (Snowkitings World Capitol) and Yuba is our closest body of water for summer wind riding. It is good news to learn that it is such a consistent morning spot, as that will be my daily bread and butter.

I am keen to study the wind patterns in central Utah and find more solid spots around here. It seems like the mountain reservoirs like Huntington offer up steady afternoon canyon winds.

Any one have more insight on weather models to check for Yuba?

Brian-
Ryan and I drove down last Sat. night, camped, and rode 15 Instincts Sun. morning and had a great time. Pretty light, however. To my recently gained and fairly limited knowledge, The Fayette Wind happens on a southerly flow with temps. in the 75-85 degree range. Sunrise till 9:30 am. Ry and I rode from 8 to 10 am. You do not need a strong south wind and I think high pressure is ok. If it is light the wind will only blow at Painted Rocks. If it is stronger it can blow all the way down to West Beach. Will we will be going there often I'm sure.

Huntington rocks

Postby John Dubock » Thu Jun 07, 2007 4:21 pm

a buddy was working near Huntington last year I think in the spring/summer. He lived at Huntington and reported constant wind. He has some cred, as his last assignments were: Yuba, Junction, Grantsville, Moab. He's been blown off more lakes than anyone I know, Troy Jorgenson, point man, Starboard brother.
