Kitesurfing ban on Lake Powell

Postby Mark Johnson » Fri Jun 16, 2006 5:33 am

I saw something on 2 news this morning about a ban on the Kite Tube. This is what looks like a flawed design of a tube towed behined a boat that you pull up on the front end as you go getting it airborne then it slams you to the side causing injuries.
Sounds like they have or are going to ban them on Powell and they have lumped in the SAFE sport of kitesurfing. Well safe as far as sports go.
Must be some of the same idiots that come up with ideas like draining Lake Powell.
I also heard on the news last week that Lake Mead was also considering such a ban on the Tube. Lets hope this also does not leed to bans on kiting in other places. :(

tube ban

Postby John Dubock » Fri Jun 16, 2006 1:09 pm

I saw the report, the tube goes as high as a plane, of course the guy injured: bought the tube, had a set of near serious injuries and states: "they shouldn't ever sell them". Lessons learned, I think its a boater attitude, not something kiters will face. The tube is a water weenie that is as round as a living room and flies behind a boat, damm thing looks like its uncontrollable.

Kite tube URL, video, see what the fuss is all about

http://www.sportsstuff.com/towables/wego/index.shtml# scroll down to the video, looks as out of control as can be! Throw in some adrenaline, gasoline and poor judgement and this is a wreck waiting to happen.

The "Tube"

Not that I have any insight but: This is just another great example of Natural Selection in action! Now instead of boaters not seeing kiters and sailors because they're looking behind the boat, they can travel full speed while looking up! Can you imagine what a microburst or wind shift would do to to one of those puppies? :-P

I am suprised no comments on kites actually being banned on one of our lakes. I dont have the link but the story does say parasails and kite boarding is also banned. All elevated sports are banned on Powell. Not that it is a great kitesurfing lake but what next Lake Mead?
