12/28 Sulphur Creek

Headed up to Evanston again in search of some snow to go with their wind. Headed down towards sulphur creek, and the snow is still looking pretty thin in that area, too. Decided to kite on the lake, which had 2-4 inches of windpacked snow on top of the ice. Ice looked about 6-8 inches thick. Not too forgiving if you blow a jump, so most of the session was speed runs across the lake. Wind was 20-25ish mph. Todd and i flew 11 waroos. 2 sessions, 1st about 1.5 hrs, 2nd one 40 mins. Had my GPS out for the 2nd session, 12.6 miles with avg speed of 19.8 mph. i'm new to a GPS gadget, so i'm not sure if that really is a fast avg, but it sure seemed so.

Thank you for posting. I am glad to hear the ice is now frozen at Sulphur. It is a good place for learning when the wind is more moderate. An average speed of close to 20 mph over 12 miles is very fast!

Was there any snow on the hill to the north?

not much snow on the hills. Probably 4-6 inches and what was there was sunbaked and heavy. I started up the hill once, but turned around after 50 yards. I was hitting bottom and shrubs. Just wasn't worth the effort. There were a few cove areas on the far side, a little bit downwind (away from the dam) where the snow piled up along the shore. Spent some time playing over there as it was the only place with safe landings for jumps. It seems the heavy storms we got over the last few weeks almost completely bypassed evanston. That said, it was a fun time and definitely worth the trip if there is no wind in the snowy places.
