Kitemare at Barbed-wire

Postby Don Losee » Fri Jul 09, 2010 5:53 pm

I write this for Mike. I am doing this because we are getting some heat about all the kiting at DCBB... from local non-kite types.

Mike will tell his story but the debrief is...

Self launch
Kite broke off carabiniere line hooked to an atv
Lines over the road
Kite on the power lines
Kite ok no sparks or fire
Lines doa
Mike ok

Thanks Don, you told it in a nut shell ... it's 9:30 and too buzzed to tell the story!!! ... bottom line, if it doesn't look right... START OVER!!! and find a local Questar guy not afraid to hold on... hang on ...and cut your lines HANGING OVER THE POWER LINES. More news to follow.

I am glad that Mike is okay.

Please explain further what happened so that we can hopefully learn from it. Was the incident weather-related. I stayed home yesterday because if all of the t-heads out there.

Other than a badly bruised ego, nothing happened to me. I was self launching using my atv as an anchor. One of the front lines was wrapped around the back horn of the kite. When I went up to untangle it, it hot launched and broke the line from the chicken loop to the atv. I should have taken the time to lay down the kite, walk it back over to the edge of the window and start over. The kite was headed "over ta Heber" when the bar snagged the fence by the road and there the kite was, just casually floatin' around the power lines. A Questar guy, who instead of working was watching my launch, jumped out of his truck and on my very hesitant request cut the kite lines. The Hindenburg made a very soft landing on the other side of the road. So there ya go, not really a kitemare... more like an almost lights-out mare.
