The wind swung around from N to SW at 12:15 and was quickly gusting to about 20. John Dubock and I got to the beach shortly thereafter and rigged a 7.0 and a 6.6, respectively. Next on the scene was George Ward, followed by Sarah & Linda and Floridian Ron Kern, who quickly vanished up the lake on his Mike's Lab Formula, powered by a 10.5 race sail. Humbling! Layne and Cindy had a look around, then headed off to check out Rainbow Bay. Just as we poleboarders were starting to think about derigging, several darksiders appeared and, by virtue of aggressive power stroking, were able to ride the rapidly diminishing wind quite successfully.

Spencer was out on his 16m bularoo and eventually ended up on the dark side of IB with a puncture would on his ankle. Three people were flying kites down on the beach. One girl got dragged quite a ways. Spencer told her she should fly a trainer first. It was her first time flying a kite. They had an assortment of Naish and SS Links on the beach. Turns out one of the guys was Steve Nyman (US ski team downhiller from Orem). He spends time on Maui and lives at Micah's house and trains with those guys at Scott Sanchez's MPG. He looked like Hercules. Hopefully he does some damage this year on the World Cup. Told him the good kiting was in his backyard on Utah Lake. I'm sure we'll see him down there soon.

Ya, when I was pulling up someone was getting there a#@ dragged down the beach. The girl (I can't remember here name - also on the team with Steve) seemed to be laughing about it after. She was just covered in dust.. not any noticeable road rash. I gave them a few pointers, like "wait for the kiter to give you the thumbs up before you hot launch them" You know stuff like that... Deer Creek isn't the bestplace to learn on a 10 meter kite in gusty winds.

My ride was fun whille it lasted (16M bularoo).. probably only had about 15 of good riding, and was out a total of 1 hr on the water. I saw some poleborders out on some massive sails. While I was in the shallows near the beach in between puffs.. i stepped on something that went into my ankle pretty good... there is so much crap on that beach (Props to Steve Nyman for picking up a lot of garbage while he was there)... it felt like a nail or spike, and caught me in the side of the ankle. It was bleeding pretty good, but I couldn't waste the wind so I kept riding. Ended at the end of the lake where I had to walk forever to get around the quicksand. Thanks Jason for giving me a lift back and patching me up later.

Good advice. Gotta watch out for our folks on the ski team so they don't get all messed up with the racing season on the doorstep. Other advice might include recognizing the pleasures of being dragged in the water versus on dry land and how little gear costs compared to medical care followed by how to ditch your stuff and hunker down for dear life when it's appropriate. Give 'em credit for getting out though.
