UL Lindon Beach. 6.9, 100 liters

Postby Rod Meiners » Fri May 16, 2008 10:18 am

Waited in Orem until the wind appeared to be strong enough - arrived to an empty Lindon beach at 7 and sailed until 8:30 fully powered (some big overpowering gusts as well). Had the whole lake to myself - or so it appeared. As I packed up to leave, a guy in a pickup arrived and started dumping wood pallets to burn. I talked to him for a while about the trashing of the beach - all the nails and junk that is now underwater. He seemed surprised that anyone cared. It is sad that they improved the area and brought in sand, but it is getting trashed by the bonfires.

Rod you are lot kinder than I. I would have just called the cops and let the guy pay the fine. Of course I would have stayed there talking to the guy to trick him into staying there until the police showed up.

What is even more pathetic is that these people drive past the city dump station to get to the water. It seems people don't understand that "you make the bed you sleep in."

This is what I propose:
The cities change the littering fine from dollars to work. The punishment should be that the offender must pay for a 20 yard dumpster and then fill it with litter from a beach designated by whatever city caught them. So basically a $400 fine and 20 hours of community service (if they work fast.)
The cities could target the bad areas first and then we would see some real change around the lake.
Just sticking someone with a fine doesn't change their attitude. Anyone who spends time cleaning will soon become the person who defends the area.
Whatever thou art, do well thy part.

I like Josh's idea. Call the cops and hang out to enjoy the fun. Then have the guy fill the dumpster. Won't take long.
