What's it like out there?

Since I've been out of town for the last three weeks, I have no idea what the conditions are like out there (water temps, levels, etc). I see that some of y'all got out on the snow not too long ago. Are we saying that the water isn't so inviting yet?

Last I heard, Rush's water level was already dropping. Is it still OK out there?

Utah Lake still drysuit-worthy, or will my 3mm wettie be sufficient?


Incidentally, if anyone is looking to travel to the Dominican Republic, I can give the low-down. Briefly, I wasn't really keen on Cabarete, but the wind was good. Las Terrenas and Portillo were much nicer, but the wind is lighter. Still, it's awesome if you can get there.

3mm will be ok if you don't fall. I was in 5/3 yesterday and it was right on the money. What didn't you like about cab?

Rush is maintaining. Has not gone down since the last time I was there a couple weeks ago. Still very good riding.

So I guess that means that I won't be riding UL for a while still (I can guarantee falls). Thanks for the info.

As for Cabarete, I wasn't a fan of the beach scene. Can't just sit back and relax without being assaulted by a dozen separate merchants. Jewlery, massages, hair braiding, etc, etc. I know the Dominicans are poor (that would be the most resounding realization of any trip to the DR), but I preferred the vibe farther out east. If they wanted to sell you something, they'd make whistling noises, and if you didn't wave them over, they'd leave you alone. In general, the locals are more savvy to tourism in Cab, so they make it a bigger point to get into your wallet.

Also, the wind was rough. Gusty and shifty. Maybe it was just the days I was there, but I got worked out there. Las Terrenas was smooth smooth smooth, and prettier than Cab. The hotels were nice, the food selection was better. The one upside is that you need less Spanish in Cab, but I speak enough to have basic communication (8 yr-old level, maybe), so I didn't have a real problem.

I have been riding 3-2 on the sunny days at UL you'll be fine. i have been still rocking my 6-5-4 on the cold days but I could have ridden my 3-2.
