June 14th Deer Creek Darkside Beach

Postby Ralph Morrison » Sat Jun 14, 2008 9:01 pm

A great day but a weird day for me. I was the first one on the water cruising back and forth. The wind is great, I'm having a blast. On a tack toward shore I notice a cloud of dust in the parking area. I didn't think too much about it, probably somebody spinning their wheels. The next tack, suddenly there's lot's of cars. A little weird but the wind is great and I'm having fun. A couple tacks later I hear a siren and an ambulance shows up. Not so good. I'm starting to feel a little guilty about having fun when somebody is hurting up there. Half a dozen tacks later Air Med comes in for a landing. Wow, it's serious up there. Feeling really guilty. Then I thought to myself, there's nothing I can do about so I might as well enjoy my self. The wind was still perfect and I had a great time. The accident was a motorcyclist going way too fast and lost it at the corner. He slid through the parking lot, just missing Mike M., then hitting a parked car.

Ralph got there early and had good wind. I showed up around 2 and could not get to the beach because the road was blocked due to the AirMed landing. The sheriff had no idea when the road was going to open, so I packed all my gear about a half mile. Of course, the road opened as I was arriving at the beach. Rigged a 13 and rode for about 20 minutes before the wind backed down. Rigged a 17 and tried to ride. Billy and Spencer with there light frames and big kites were getting brief rides interspersed with big lulls. I spent most of the time walking back to the launch point through muddy flats. A big crew showed up not long after I arrived. I guess what we learned is that we need to get there earlier to get the goods.

Did it ever turn up again later in the day?

Anyway I hit it about right I got a good long ride in perfect 13m conditions. I worked my way up to Island beach area , by the time I got there I could feel it backing off so I headed back in. Nice day at the lake with good friends food and fun!
