A Winter Forcaster?

I'm easy (and cheap too ;*) )but if we decide to go this way, I can build a page similar to what we have now only with
snow kite info, pretty easily. If we decide to go this way I'd be happy to do it, or not of you'd rather have something else.

A daily or weekly site update would be good too. As part of the overall conditions report.

I am pretty confident in winter forecasting..

Powder Mountain
Monte Cristo
High Uintahs (sled Access)
Sulphur
Rush
Strawbs
Skyline

but I don't know PC area.

I believe most locals can do just as good, if not better.

Being a Kiter, that shouldn't be an issue for you.

Utah is becoming a world class snowkiting destination,
and I agree that newbees and non locals could use our help.

I would entertain the idea of posting forecasts if I could get some help.

I propose that if I could get texts or emails from Brian, Billy, Kenny, Jake (others)
on thier recomendation in the am, that I would post a combined forecast.
That would take the pressure of any one person to be responsible.
On the days I'm out of town, we would arrange for one of these other forecasters to post.

Marty,

I am willing to help. PC is not that hard it gets the post-frontal north wind and the pre-frontal south winds, not much on east or west winds (unless they are strong, which they rarely ever are).

Craig,

We owe you big time. I think we should pay you for your services. How about we double the annual dues and give you half? It would still be an absolute steal for the service you provide.

A separate weather page for winter forecasting would be great.

I pay a lot more attention to the winds aloft during the winter months, Brian has several links.

Kenny,

It shouldn't really be considered payment for the dedication that Craig shows us, however, we did give him a couple of well deserved tokens. One was paying for his I-windsurf account (which is kind of a selfish thing on our part :)) . I think we floated a gift cert. to Big winds too. But they are tokens! He is 99% volunteer! ;)) BTW... I don't know if anybody asked Craig if he wanted to go year round... :|| jk Craig...

I personally don't think that we need to do a seperate page for Snowkite weather necessarily... Just add them to current page but under a "Snowkite Stations Heading". EIther way.

PS Josh, I was going to dis you for being an AH, but you stole my thunder! ;* It's a joke people... Irresistibly wide open... Maybe I need to add that to Marty's acronymn list.

I know you're just kidding, but I did want to reply anyway. Marty, and several other Kiters have been trying to
get me to do the Winter forecast since they started Snow Kiting. The biggest issue is that I just don't have
any experience with Snow Kiting, and a good deal of my forecasting efforts are experience based. I can tell you
that upper atmospherics and the Jet will play a considerably more important role in a Snow Kite forecast because
of how much more coupled the upper atmosphere is in the Winter, and because of how much higher Snow kiters usually are
(triple entendre, yuk yuk). But you're going to get a much better forecast from someone who's fully engaged in
the sport.

It's not because of my slacker mentality, or the fact that I just need a break, at least that's my story and I'm stick'n to it ;*)

There are a lot of good Forecasters in the Snow Kiter community (heck anybody who rides
the wind is a pretty good forecaster), Marty seems to get the most Winter rides though.
Remember, he runs his own business. That takes a lot of energy. He also plays hard. That takes a lot of energy.
And despite the fact that he looks like he's 30, and Kites like he's 20, he might need reading glasses to check
his chicken loop. The community should make sure he doesn't feel pressured to Forecast. If it's a passion he
wants to pursue, great!

Awesome, I love it when a plan comes together. (quote from A-team, my favorite show as a kiddie...maybe my van is a subliminal side affect of that ;)) )

I think Marty and Kenny have it dialed in. Marty is a great resource and weather hound... and travels with a pocket computer that is always beeping wind reports at him. Kenny has kited and traveled across Utah wind sites as much as anyone and for as long as I can remember. And good point Kenny, we don't need another page or forum, lets just post where Craig posts on the 'Where to ride' page.

I'd be willing to shoot Marty Skyline info and other predictions I may have... and if Billy, Jake, Kenny and whomever else sends their reports... Marty can compile a daily consensus of primary Utah riding conditions for this winter. And when he's out of town we can all pick up the slack and post for him.

Marty, I think we just volunteered you to do our dirty work this winter. All in favor? AYE!

I like Kenny's style of forecasting.
Much like Craig would do if he was our winter forecaster.

I would propose relinquishing your votes to Kenny.

I will give it a try.

I would appreciate input from Marty, Brian, Billy, and anyone else that would like to join in. I don't have as good of a feel for PowMow as Les or Auggie, so they may wish to pipe in.

We may want to work together as a community this first year. If you think it is going to blow at a particular location, don't hesitate to reply to my forecast.

The only other thing I ask is that riders continue to post. It really is helpful for forecasting.

I can help with the forecasting at PowMow and Monte. We just need more snow. By the way, I did trim a lot of the aspen grove just down from the parking lot at PowMow. It should be easier to get back to the lot going on either side of the grove and maybe we can avoid leaving kites in the trees this year.

Augie,

I would appreciate your help. Please feel free to send me or just add an addendum to the daily forecast, whichever you prefer.

Please let us know when there is enough snow there to ride. Thanks for cutting down the aspen grove to help facilitate the access to the hill. I will go plant some aspen trees in my neighbor's yard to make it a carbon-neutral deal ;))

Hey Augie,

Please keep us posted on Pow Mow conditions, especially since you are up there with visual reports. We are anxiously waiting for conditions to improve both there and at Strawberry so we can host some on snow demos for the locals.

The management has already welcomed Kite-Utah and Ozone Snowkites to host several demo days at Pow Mow, but we need a man on the scene like you to let us know when its good.

BTW - Any chance the resort will groom the area this winter, or will it primarily be primitive backcountry conditions like the past? Just curious. I like BC better anyway...but with groomers nearby it would be twice as tempting to head to pow mow to kite on corduroy.

Windzup,
Brian Schenck

In the meantime there is minimal kiting and sage scraping rides to be had at Skyline, before it melts this week. :x
Excitement, adventure... a Snowkite Jedi craves not these things.

Sorry for the slow reply, I was out of town. Grooming the kite area is a pretty slim chance. frist of all the terrain is too large to groom it all. Also, the groomers who I spoke with hate going out there because they sink in the deep snow. The cats weigh too much to try and float around on top and groom also.
