strawberry River 14 m. caution

Good crew at the river today. Challenging wind early but better in the afternoon. Snow was better than I expected and makes me hopeful that we still have some winter left. All and all a killer day. Saw two eagles, always a sign of fortune. Until next time, hopefully Friday, out.

I got there at 1:00 and didn't even get dressed until 2:00 the wind was so light. At 2:00 I went out on the 12M and it went from crappy to halfway decent to really great to halfway decent again and then to crappy then to super awesome followed by a short period of marginally OK. Throughout the non-stop 5 hour session, although the snow was in fact quite good, my knees went from marginally good to beat to hell. Today feels like a good day to work.

Nice! I'm curious, what are the snow conditions?

I had to take a load of stuff to the dump yesterday and saw a couple segulls... Ok... Maybe 1/2 a million... What kind of fortune is that?

The snow was actually pretty good. There was about 6 inches of soft fresh snow on top of the icy stuff underneath. In the lee side of the hills and cornices it was even deeper. I suspect with this storm tonight that there'll be more for the weekend. The coverage at Strawberry River is still OK but as you get to CC east a lot of scrub is showing through and the base seemed to be getting thin at a lot of the other launches.

Funny. That pretty much describes kiting in UT!

I was out on my 11 from 6 to 730 in great wind. I watched my very ballsy newbie friend get dragged around on my 9. Ended up breaking down the 9 and towing to the highway. Had a fairly epic exit with my 2wd car. A certain Ford truck with WA plates helped me for a solid 20 minutes with a tow strap to get out of the wind drifted lot (THANKS BRO!!!) Even a few snomobilers made a pass or two to pack down the road, oh and I got to use my avalance shovel in the parking lot as well - I will return with the 4 Runner today. Funny stuff...
