First time kiting at Yuba. Really nice spot. Huge, soft, sandy beach. Gulf coast emerald green water. 92 degrees. wore a 1.5mm wetsuit top and board shorts. We were at North Beach, looked like there might have been some more wind to the SE of us, but can’t complain. Wind was an avg of 20mph per my wind meter for the whole time we were there. Had 2 sessions of about 1½ hours each.
Rigged the 14m to start as the wind was a little holey when we first arrived. Wind wasn’t punchy but rolled up and down. Maybe should have rigged smaller as there were definitely a few white knuckle moments out there. High gust for the first session was 41mph (!), but for the most part, the wind was in the 20mph range and it was a nice, juicy 14m session. That kite has a great top end. Ended the session with my chicken loop working its way out of the hook, shooting up to the bar, ripping the bar out of my hands, and then my leash breaking. No big deal as the wind was side-on and I wasn’t that far out. The kite just drifted in and I got some exercise with a short swim.
Took out an 11m for the second session and was rewarded with the middle half hour averaging 25-27. Great fun with huge jumps and ripping transitions. High gust for the second session was 36. Overall, a great day.
For anyone who hasn’t made the trip down to Yuba, it’s a really nice spot. It was 1hr 50 mins from PC, which puts it at about 1:25 from SLC, about 35 mins farther than Lincoln. If you’ve got a couple of days and the forecast looks good, you can camp right on the beach. Highly recommended.
