KITEMARE @ SKYLINE 12/15

Postby David Kyle » Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:42 pm

Was kiting in the backcountry on the northwest side of the highway behind the wind fences. Took a crappy fall wich left me stuck in some deep
powder upsidown. I was able to unstrap my board and started flailing around to get stood up. With one perfect kick, I knocked my board loose from
it's perch and sent it careening down the backside of the mountain. Un-$#%@*&%-believable!!! I desided to walk my kite down about three hundred feet to the treeline and parked it.
I started hiking down as I thought " it couldn't have gone far" right. It took me an hour to hike down following the trail of gashed trees and broken branches. The thing must have broken the sound
barrier at one point, while on a flat section , it hit a kicker and launched nearly forty feet before I picked up the trail. After about a quarter mile, things got worse. The trail ended over a steep roller.
My board found the only unclimbable pine tree on the mountain and stuck in just a foot out of reach. In final desperation, I managed to fish it out with my bootlace tied to a 9/16" endwrench, (the only thing in my backpack besides a bottle
of water). I thought hicking down was exsausting in waist deep, crawling back out was ten times worse. The only good thing about all this was that my 17m Waroo, hadn't wandered and was ready to relaunch and take me back to the
parking lot...... Think i'll go to Strabs next time. Oh, the board suffered very minor damage and I almost suffered a heart attack. :(

Been there done that... Twice at Skyline, once at powmow. Never had to yank my board out of a tall tree. Hiking back uphill in deep snow is the worst!!!

Now you are a snowkiter. It not worst then kiteboarding when you have to swim back to shore.

I have lost my board down the mountain a few time. I'm glad I learned my lesson before I went to Alaska.

It happened to me last spring at PowMow also. My ski's zipped down the hill when I was packing up. I didn't have to walk all the way back up because Chasta was there and he towed me partially back up. Thanks to him I was able to catch the last lift ride of the day out of there and didn't walk all the way back to the lot.

Damn David
Damn That board! You know what I mean brother. This makes a great point. I have fallen and gotten hung up upside down in a powdery tree well. Snowboard stuck in branches as I hung there drowning in the light pow. It was bad. In my case I broke my binding to get unstuck. We at 3B are selling a binding that would be a huge help in a fall like yours. The Voileâ„¢ Light Rail. One pull release. Check it out.

The one thing that kept me going was having one of those rare
long personal conversations with MYSELF. At the end, I was realy surprised at how far I would go for a damn snowboard.
