x2 on doc's pro plugs, they definitely prevent eardrum rupture or perforations from slapping the water or having water slap you.

They also help a lot if you have surfer's ear (bony growths in your ear from years of cold water fun.) but you usually have to buy a few sizes to get the ones that fit right.

I was wearing my kayak ear plugs before losing them. They work well to prevent this. I remember when I bought them, the kayak shop had all the sizes out to try on before buying them (yes they are washed with alcohol after each person tried them on). Maybe there's a kayak shop around here that does the same thing so you can avoid buying several sizes.
