Skyline Nov 24. 11m & up. Good powder & Cold

Postby windzup » Wed Nov 24, 2010 8:10 pm

After shipping a few kites out for the holiday weekend, I opened up the bar, served a few beers, and tag teamed with Heather and I headed out the door for Skyline. The flags had been out steady all day in town from the SW. Clouds cleared after the AM and I knew it would be good. I arrived at 3pm, to find Kenny, Peter and David all gliding and climbing around Bosco Hill.

David was holding down a 17, but the wind was blowing solid and I put up the new 11m Frenzy. Well powered. Kenny was on a bigger kite, but styling fine and gliding at will.

The wind in the valley and on the ridge was SW, but the upper level seemed to have a strong west push (as the forecast called for). It seemed the best power was the west wind, making upwind easy, but the SW reaches were tough to penetrate.

Wouldn't seem like a good gliding day, and the gust rate was mild to moderate. But the boys made flying look natural and easy. The West and South West mix made the whole stretch of Bosco Hill good for gliding. Kenny showed us that.
It was the coldest day yet I've experienced at Skyline. Not as cold as Georgetown Lake Montana (-40 w/o wind chill twice). Yet Skyline was easy single digits, and cold on the fingers. I wore a top and bottom base layer and shell, with a thick medium layer on top. Not bad when riding, but when you stopped the toes and fingers wanted to scream. I did.

Here's some pics.

It was a sunny, cold powder day at Skyline. I showed up around noon and the temperature was 2 F according to the thermometer in my truck. Shawn was in his car, he pumped an 11 and got some rides before hurting his shoulder. Wind was blowing 15 - 20 near the cars and 25+ on the hill for the first couple of hours with new snow blowing everywhere. It toned down after a couple hours. Peter showed up with a 12M, he wanted something bigger, but he was getting some excellent glides and airs. Dave Kyle was styling on his 17. Brian showed up with a beautiful new green Ozone Frenzy 11M and he was rode hard. He loaned the Frenzy to Peter late in the day. I flew a 15M Speed 3, it felt a bit big at times, but was perfect for mining powder in the lee areas (and there was plenty to be had). Big props to Peter for filming on such a frigid day. It was a day to be thankful for...
