7/21 Nice Clean Salt Ponds 21m

Postby Kenny » Sat Jul 21, 2012 10:41 pm

Salt Ponds Clean??? Yup, there is so much salt in that pond right now that it is sterile for all practical purposes. I arrived around 2 PM to wind blowing 10 - 12 mph. So I put up the 21m and went cruising in the salt water for a couple hours. The wind blew like a fan and I watched as the skies over the Oquirrh's, Stansbury Range, and Rush Valley slowly darkened with threatening storm clouds, but it was bright and sunny at the Salt Ponds. I packed up my gear just as the wind switched due to storm cloud junk winds out of the south. Water was smooth and glassy the entire time. Not very exciting, more of a zen experience. Just to nice to be out on the water and powered by the wind.

Sounds like an awesome ride! I've been wanting to give the ponds a try. Where do you park at launch from?

I park on the East side of the ponds and pull as far away from the freeway as possible. The ponds continue to recede leaving a surface of a thin salt crust with mud underneath. I have to hike a ways to launch my kite. Therefore, booties are a must and I recommend the higher over ankle model to keep the salt out. Goggles are also a good idea as the water is so salty that it will blind you. I always bring a big water jug to wash off the salt from my body.
