Rode alone for a couple hours in light, but steady winds. South bay is windier than SSB and is the place to go to get some upwind distance. Some partying boaters anchored off SSB were going nuts over the whole kiteboard thing. Bikinis everywhere. Had there been more wind I could have really put on a show and got a phone number, or kiss, or something. I did enjoy a cold Corona on the back of the boat with the kite in the air. Was a great way to end the day especially after the mrning skunk at Yuba.

South Bay

Glad you got some. Where did you launch for South Bay. I've launched about 1/2 way down. Past the last ranch on the shore line. Kinda a gravel road pull off area. Anywhere near there?

I was on my way out the door to go to SSB. Then I checked one more time and Bluffdale looked good but Provo air was only 6 or 7. I think when there is a lot of west provo air reads low compared to what its blowin at SSB. I usually like to see 12 or more at Provo Air before I head out. Next time I will watch how much west it has.

SSB

Sounds like you rode 'just around the cornor' from SSB, kinda like where we launched several years ago when the water was low. Not the South arm West and way south of Lincoln.

South Bay?

Postby stokes » Thu Jul 05, 2007 9:35 pm

Where exactly is South Bay?

Stokes,

South Bay is on the west side of West Mountain. Or in other words, on the west side of the mountain across from Lincoln Beach. It is decent on a south and gets wind similar to Rush on a north (fills in earlier). The difficulty over there is a decent launching place. Everything is rocky with the current high water level at Utah Lake. Used to be some sandy beaches over there for launching. There is one spot that I found that is a good 5 miles drive once you get to the west side, just past the orchards where the north wind gets a little boost from the proximity of the lake to the mountain. There are also reeds directly upwind forming a nice flat water area. The only problem is the launch stinks - rocks, weeds and grass. Probably could do it with a tarp.

Its the same area Derek had his accident, kinda rocky/gravely launch, I've had some good rides on southwest days with Dean.

My bad. I guess I was riding at SSSB(South South Sandy Beach) which is basically the broad area between SSB and Lincoln. It is always a little windier there compared to the area immediately upwind of SSB. I really wish we had the old SSSB beach back. It was huge with side-shore wind. Great place to teach. However, it was several drought years that created that beach and we don't want anymore bad snow years.
