Project - Utah Snowkite Movie

Postby Kenny » Fri Nov 16, 2007 9:07 am

After watching Cloud 9 last night, I thought we can make a movie with Utah locals. We don't have to leave the state and Chasta comes to us, we don't have to go to him. I am not proposing a movie for general release, rather a movie shot by us for us.

I have access to 2 HD cameras and tripods. My idea is to set them up on good weather days. If the riders will take turns filming and riding, we can come up with some great footage. I will bring a small whiteboard, so that riders can record their names. I think it would be cool to have a lot of local talent on screen. I want to include footage of big boosts, kite loops, handle passes, kickers, rails, powder shots, gliding, and crashes.

My experience last year is that what works best is to setup the cameras in a specific location with 2 camera angles and then to have several riders ride past. Trying to scan the hill while holding the camera in your hand makes for choppy footage.

I will try to post ahead where I am going in case you want to meet up and help shoot film/ride. Let me know if you are interested in the project.

KENNY-

way interested in the project! this winter season is all about progression for me. i'm going to try and not puss out and really progress my riding this year. my skiing ability is more than ample to do some cool things, i just need to push the kite a bit more...

but, i'm totally interested in helping out wherever i can. filming, riding, even just making for some good crash segments... sounds like the Jilly, Bake, or "best" crew has similar plans. this season should be outstanding with the amount of events we have going on here. i would imagine that everyone will be pushing their limits with these venues and would make for good footage. maybe we should start getting an event thread started.

on a side note that may apply to a utah local film this year, i've got a few backcountry spots in mind. specifically baldy mountain pass in the uintas. anyone ride up there before? riding up and around baldy would be some awesome terrain. it woudl be fun to get some sleds together and plan for a windy weekend and have a backcountry snowjam- true backcountry style. baldy has enough pitch that even without wind the hiking and skinning and just riding would be available. i've also got a few spots up there where i've made tow-in jumps and step up gaps for those interested. i know we've got a milllion other events this winter, but i think this could be a true utah style event with the amount of backcountry riding we have and the vast array of snow riding experience among our locals. filming would obviously have to happen up there.

sorry for the rambling, i'm still just a bit amped from last night. i do plan on doing the baldy trip, i just don't have any kiting contingent with me yet...

pray for snow!!!!! maybe now that jake and bill left it will snow this weekend.

Being able to track the rider makes all the difference, IMO. Check this:

I've got a small shockproof camera that can be used as either a helmet cam or a kite cam.

The other trick I noticed was having a cameraman laying on a sled being pulled by the kiteskier. Obviously, you can't jump, but you could get some good carving shots. And you could work as a camera team, just sailing around shooting the other riders.

I appreciate the offer of help and the stoke. I think if we all take turns we can get some excellent footage.

Josh,

I have seen the camrig before. I ordered a w30 Pentax camera, I just need to order the camrig. I think it would be cool to get some footage from an angle above the rider especially for powder and gliding shots.

UWA Brewvies night

Postby mike rossberg » Mon Nov 19, 2007 10:42 am

Later in the season after all you aspiring movie buffs get the footage together the UWA could sponsor an end of the the season/start of the season movie party at Brewvies. Our annual UWA kick off dinner brings out about 50 people. The movie last week had 150+. Your ideas are always welcomed.

I'd like to help with the editing. I've wanted to do something like this. I have a HD cam also.

Kris,

Another HD cam would be terrific. I have a little experience editing on a Mac using HDMovie software. Another editor would be great as I expect that we will have ample footage this year.

The one thing we need is free music for the soundtrack to avoid copyright laws. Does anyone know a good source?

Mirror Lake/Baldy Mtn Kiting

Postby Craig Gawreluk » Wed Nov 21, 2007 3:14 pm

Hey Mike M,

Please keep me posted on when your heading up Mirror Lake as I did kite up there once last year and see a lot of potential. I have my own Mtn sled and pull behind tobaggan so can haul up gear as needed.

Get it done before April! So far the meeting format is looking something like this. Meeting 7-8... Movies 8-10!

And thanks to the useful gathered from Brian's event. If we have enough people, then we don't get charged for the venue... They would make their money in food and beer sales.
