Arrived to 6 mile cove Thursday morning to ~20 mph winds, sunny but chilly early, so decided to let it warm up a bit before heading out. Temp up in Searchlight was only about 30, but it was 15 degrees warmer by the lake. While waiting, Lisa and Zach arrived with sea doo in tow, and were very gracious in putting up with me for the weekend. Very pretty area. The "lake" is about 2-3 miles wide and 15 or so long, surrounded by rugged mountains. There were only 3 or 4 other groups there, which was nice and very different than the zoo we heard it was like in the summer. Unfortunately, as it warmed up that first day, the wind died off and we only got a short light-wind session in before the wind gave out. Rather than sit around, we drove down to check out katherines to get the lay of the land. While the wind there had lasted longer than up at 6 mile, it died out there before we arrived. We met John Dubock and a bunch of other windriders yet to see the light. While in the Laughlin area, we stopped into a casino for thanksgiving dinner for a whopping $11.95 (not bad, either).
Friday morning brought sunshine, similar temps and building winds. Headed out for the first session on an 11, with zach and lisa on 9 & 7. I had high hopes on using my 7 for the afternoon session, but ended up on the 11 again. it was a very fun session for all. tons of jumps and we were all on the right size kite for the wind.
Saturday was much warmer with similar winds in the morning, same kites as friday, with the afternoon being a bit lighter, but i was well powered on my 15m. Again 2 nice sessions.
I headed back to UT saturday afternoon, leaving lisa and zach for what was left of their romantic weekend.
If forcast is similar this time next year, i'd highly recommend the trip. Drive time from SLC is right about 7 hrs - a doable 3 day weekend, but probably better for a 4-day trip.
