You're right Rick, the wind is side/side off from the north. If you look at the photo with the sailor in it there is a white wave that's about to break for real. That's where the real crunch is.
The sailor in the picture is schlogging in no man's land. From the backside of a wave to about where he is the wind is light. Close to the wave is where the wind is. As the wave gets closer he'll pick up speed, but probably not enough. My guess is he got munched.
