1/30 HillAFB bomb dump 10m Frenzy

I went to a new spot that I found while driving around the base. It is actually 2 different fields separated by a road with a power line running along the road. It is right in the middle of the base so I am sure someone will give me shit about kiting so close to the bomb dump. That's OK since I already cleared it with the proper people (I think). I kited on the south side of the road in marginal winds but as long as there is snow it looks good from a south, west or north direction. There is about 20 inches of fairly firm snow but it isn't crusty at all. The top surface is actually kind of soft. The other field is larger on the north side. I went for about an hour and a half till the wind died and I had to go anyway. It is pretty nice to be able to call and get the actual wind speed right before I head out of my office. I can be there and flying within 15 minutes of calling. As a federal worker, I also get 3 hours a week to work out on company time as long as it is some type of physical activity performed on base. In reality, they are paying me to kite instead of staying in the office and work. I'll milk this as long as I can.

I work just down the road from base and was wondering if I need some special clearance to get on base and kite? It sounds like a pretty sweet gig you got going there. I'd love to take a lunch break with you and get some rides in.

Also, where do I find the current wind report for the area? I used to use the link on this website but it's obviously changed. Is there a wind report for Pine View online somewhere?

Sorry, you have to work on base to get on. Pineview doesn't have a wind gauge, I just use the point forecast and the Power plant at the mouth of wWeber canyon has a gauge on the Mesowest site under Weber county.

Ahh, the taste of forbidden fruit. Like poaching the Swaner Preserve, nothing tastes better. However, I don't think I will poaching Hill AFB anytime soon, it is not worth ending up in a military brig!

Enjoy it Augie, guess you will have the place all to yourself.
