3/31 strabs 11m frenzy

Postby Mark Johnson » Mon Mar 31, 2008 9:04 pm

Started out this morning on my way to work knowing that I would miss a great day of snowkiting.
Once I got to my exit in Lehi much to my excitement the road was closed due to the weather.
It didnt take to long to convince myself to kite instead of waiting for it to open.
waited for Sal to get off work at noon and headed up to Chicken Creek, The wind was cranken when we pulled in. We rigged then it died.
Billy showed and said it was blowin at the cabins. We packed up and rode up near the cabins for a couple hours.
The snow was nice and the wind was pretty good.
Fun season this year on the snow. I am getting hooked on this as much as riding water.
Might have been the last day on the snow this year, unless I get fired for skipping out on what was left of the day at work.

Marty and I were there Mon. We started at chicken creek west and rigged an 11 and 12 respectively. The snow was like glue . . stickiest crap I've ever been on. The winde kept getting lighter and lighter and at about 3:00 we packed it up. Marty went home . . I just for kicks drove down to the cabins. There were a few people out at the plateau before the cabins and it looked good so I got out the 12M manta and re-suited up. Snow was worlds better, wind was steady and great right up until the sun set at about 8:00. Non-stop goodness - I think that spot is the ticket for the lighter days as the wind seems a bit more compressed at the top of the plateau. Now if we can just get more wind maybe we'll get some more snow days before summer.

When Dave and I were riggin,
It was blowing 20mph.
Figured easy downwinder to "cabins"
Sticky snow, wind getting lighter, and under rigging,
kept us from exploring much.

Should have rigged at View point, or towers.

Felt guilty for leaving work, karma sux.

To much west....

Tommy and I have been parking at the cabins abunch and heading up wind, some days there is a 10mph or more differance from CC to the cabins, on Monday the snow and wind sucked and was up and down like it was dying then filling in then dying again, at CC but as soon as you got out of the shadows of the hills and on to the resviour it was on! When there is a lot of west in the wind it tends to do that always. trust in the cabins or the dreamscape area that mark sal and dave rode....... There has been other days also where there is no wind anywhere at strawbs but at uncle toms cabins and dreamscape.

I also meet a few girls from CO out on lake the other day. (sat?) THey had launched at the marina and said the wind was great and so was the snow over there. Again a crappy day at CC but great on the lake and in the hills...lots of west in it.....

Just my observasions for what they are worth........

We got there at 10 and roade intill 4 juiced me on 11M instict II Tommy frenzy 7.5. Knee deep to way to deep freash snow everywhere in the hills...Epic day for us we joked it may have been one of the best pow days all year since it was such a surprise!!!

Dave, Bordy, Marty: Those are my feelings exactly. When it is light wind down by Chicken Creek, go check out the Cabins. I've seen the forecast for west or NW but dead calm at CC, headed up to the plateau and kited on easterly winds. Dave Birkbeck and I explored that area quite a bit in 2006. We named the hilly area just before the smooth plateau "Dave's World". Last year in 2007, there was minimal coverage so it was tough to ride there and CC, but I did ride all around the plateau, the cabins, under the powerlines, out to the reservoir and back quite a few days. Last year, 2007, there were no parking restrictions, so you could park on the edge of the hwy (US 40). This year they put the No Parking signs (on US 40) back up, as they had in 2005 and 2006. Just like Billy said, when there is too much West in it, and too light, it is windier up there. Where are you calling "Dreamscape" ? Utahkiteriders assn. should buy a cabin there for next winter.

The no parking is most of the winter but it ended last week I believe. I was parked on the side of the highway there and an officer stopped. He simply asked, "broken down or just going to go out and play?" I told him I was there to play and asked if it was OK to park there and he said it was fine. I'm sure a week or two earlier and that wouldn't have been the case.
