Better late than never! My wind chimes started tinkling about 1:30, but it wasn't until almost 3 that a reasonable session seemed like a possibility. Headed for DC expecting some nice, mellow huge gear (formula board, 9.5 sail) cruising. I did use the formula board because the wind was pretty puff at first, but a couple of 20 mph gusts convinced me that a 7.5 would be a better sail choice. Whit arrived at about 3:30 (shortly before I hit the water) and rigged a 9.0 kite. We both ended up being nicely powered up from about 4 until almost 6, at which point I quit due to fatigue; the wind was backing off a bit, but there were still 20 mph gusts coming through. No powerboats; small, clean swell. Beautiful scenery. A really nice afternoon!

Air temp: 60; water temp: 61.

Kiting was good. Just DC Jim and me out on the water. 2 Fisherman by the boat ramp. I saw SND go to 14 gusting 20 at 2PM. Made the drive and it was worth it, sort of.

It is a long walk to the water now. I rigged a small kite (9M waroo) and used a 7 foot surfboard. The wind lasted until about 6PM. Hands got a little cold. I did switch down to my twin tip 145 at about 5:30 when it seemed to pick up.

BEWARE !!!!! Parking outside the park on Hwy 189. Someone got into my car and stole my wallet, ipod, and small digital, camera. I thought it was another kiter parking and setting up to walk to the water. He was in a grey mini van and looked like he was walking around setting up, but I was way out on the lake. I came in closer and he walked up to his van and left. Bummer !!

BEWARE !!! I parked just east of the park entrance about 200 yards, where the opening in the fence is.

Otherwise, Jim and I had a nice session. Whit Guild

DC parking

Island Beach is free, just drive in. No rangers, no fees. There were only two Rangers on a big Saturday mid summer, no way they are checking now. Lucky if the bathrooms will be open soon, and they'll shut off the water.

No parking on the beach, trailers are ok. Hang with us poleboarders and no one gets hurt...just kidding!

Not sure about Sailboat Beach, the rangers might make a minor effort there, as long as we park off the grass and lower beach they seem to leave us alone.

If you can afford to drop a small fortune on gear and lessons then you can afford a $70/yr tax deductible contribution to the BLM for a state parks pass.

Sorry to disagree with John D. But when I was there last Sat 9/22 two cars got tickets for non payment of parking fee. Fine was just go and pay the fee.
I saw 4 rangers there on Sat.

Jason,

I am here for my wife, Carolyn's Gallery Show starting this week at the Kimball Art Center in Park City. Artist reception is this Friday 9/28 from 6 to 9 PM in conjunction with the monthly Gallery Stroll. We will be there. Everyone is invited, please stop by. (BBQ at Carnahan's Fri Aftnoon)

She has 30 Photographs displayed in the Badami Gallery until Jan 10, 2008. Check out her website..... carolynguild.com

No big surf trips lately. A few contest in Cali and lots of SUP surfing on my new 10' 6" Stand Up board. We had very small surf in San Diego this summer so the SUP was great on the 6" to 1 foot surf.

Aloha

DC parking

Postby John Dubock » Wed Sep 26, 2007 3:33 pm

Since Jim and friends seem to sail DC 4+ times a week he and others keep an eye out for strange characters. We've negotiated with the Rangers to leave our trailers on the beach, a big deal when its 1/4 mile to the water just to change a sail. Didn't have to feed the Rangers either this year to get that privledge.

We see tickets given to cars illegally parked on the sand and warn plenty of cars that it can be a $70 ticket.

Hate to see anyone ripped off but there is a ton of casual traffic on the highway, and next to zero within the gates.

I agree $9 a day is a ripoff but $70 for at least 12 months works at a few other State Parks also.

the other option is to be as strong as Carl, he WALKS his huge sail up to the grass to derig. Some days I don't even sail that far.
